In January 1999 I met Anthony “Big Ant” Marin while shopping at Amoeba in San Francisco. He’s had a very large impact on my life ever since that day. Not only has he put me on to some great records. He’s also introduced me to a small core group of great friends that I continue to collaborate with and see to this day. We’d be here for a while if I put all of the dots together for you. Let’s just say, one of these folks I met through my affiliation Big Ant is Tim Cohen. You may recognize his MC name Smif Carnivorous from the legendary Forrest Fires Collective, his folk persona Feller Quinton, or maybe you recognize him from the highly acclaimed S.F. Rock band Black Fiction. You may just know him from the Fresh and Only’s.
This particular Thursday night was special. Mad Squirrel, Eddie Vic, and I who all know each other through knew Big Ant, met Tim out front of DC9 before their performance. Which was one of my favorite shows I attended this year. I hadn’t really familarized myself with their music until now. It’s never too late though. The Fresh and Only’s are a tight nit group of very talented musicians that have been described as San Francisco’s “new garage rock” movement. On top of their exceptional musical abilities you have the song writing of Tim Cohen. The pairing of the two couldn’t be better. This evening included some new members for this particular tour. Which is thick in content that is delivered with precision and emotion. One of my favorite songs performed this evening was Fog Machine. I just love Wymond Miles guitar playing. If you haven’t heard of the Fresh and Only’s, I suggest that you take a moment to look them up.
