This experience was very different from my first time seeing Ariel Pink in 2010. I saw him when he was touring the “Before Today” album. It was a good show, but I remember him being awkward and disengaged from the audience. He basically went through the set list and that was it. I remember him saying “wow, I’m in Washington DC, this is weird” in between songs once and that was about it for engaging the crowd.
The show at 930 was different. Ariel Pink showed a lot of his personality. This time he addressed the crowd several times, he was engaged, cracked jokes in between songs, it was like a whole other person performing. I believe that fans of artists like to feel like they know or have some sort of a connection with the artist. One of my favorite moments of this performance was when Ariel Pink asked “Where’s Ian MacKaye? Where’s Ian Savonius? Not here, we smoke pot”. I supposed that’s an inside joke. Which is funny to those of us who know the references. I guess you “had to be there”.
The music was tremendous. This time Ariel Pink and the Hunted Graffiti were touring their most recent album “Pom Pom”. If you haven’t seen or heard Ariel Pink I suggest you take a listen to some of his music or see him live.
