- Two Hooks One Verse
I was first introduced to the Boogiemonsters “Riders of the Storm: The Underwater Album” when I was in college. My roommates and I just hosted a party at our small apartment right before the school went on winter break. As the night winded down, one of my roommates stumbled back to his room and returned with a cd he wanted to add to our 5 disk changer. I remember hearing the opening to Juggernauts and I was immediately consumed by the music coming from the stereo. Absorbing the atmosphere while digesting the night’s events with the intoxicating effect of the black lights and tapestries we used to decorate for our party, this record quickly became the soundtrack for some really great memories that winter of 1996.
Fast forward to 2001. I’m working on my second mix tape. I choose to open this tape with “Honeydips in Gotham”. TEis mix had garnered awards in the Septembe 2001 issue of URB magazine. One of the first things that was mentioned was how the reviewer was pleasantly reminded of this great song by the Boogiemonsters.
Later, I personally took it upon myself to locate Vex and reach out for a collaboration. At this time, I don’t think he’d really done a whole lot outside of “Riders of the Storm” and “God Sound”. Vex’s label Confidential Records was still in its infancy. It was a challenge to track him down or find out much on the crew down at this time, until I came across a MySpace page. We now present to you a collaboration. BlakeNine &Vex DaVortex from Boogiemonsters. Enjoy.
