  • The Acorns Set to Release “Oak Follies” EP

While mainstream Hip Hop gets all the glory, there are other Hip Hop artists that are doing the hard work of challenging listeners and pushing boundaries of what people recognize as Hip Hop music; you can describe The Acorns, as just that. The duo from the DMV, that consists of Mad Squirrel and DJ BlakeNine, takes the genre and does things that stray from the norm in terms of song structure and the fusion and use of other genres.

As a DJ, it’s obvious how BlakeNine could be influenced by other genres yet both men take chances and risks that have made them beloved by their fan bas, building a cult following. That following should be pleased to know that The Acorns are set to release their 5-song EP, Oak Follies, this spring on March 10.

  • The Acorns – It’s No Secret Video

DC duo The Acorns dwell in the quirky and oddball part of the hip-hop universe, along the likes of Kool Keith and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. Comprised of One Love Massive’s BlakeNine and MC Mad Squirrel, the pair dropped their EP Oak Future on local label Candlewax Records earlier this year. This bizarre music video for “It’s No Secret” imagines a seedy and dangerous societal underbelly of addictive nuts and pine cones.

  • DC Hip Hop Duo Return with Oak Future EP

The word has been out for a while now, but, seeing as the new release is set to drop soon, we thought we’d take a moment to remind you that DC hip hop duo The Acorns have indeed returned. Comprised of Team One Love’s BlakeNine and his partner in crime Mad Squirrel, the two felt the creative juices return after a hiatus to work on other projects. Going straight to work, the re-unified Acorns set out planning a new release. The Candlewax Records (who incidentally will be putting out the new record) website updated the release of the new album, Oak Future as March 11th, 2014.

The Acorns are providing a healthy combination of current big names doing interesting things, such as Danny Brown, and classic 90’s experimental hip-hop such as Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Kool Keith, and Anti-Pop Consortium. It’s a fantastic breath of fresh air compared to the overly bloated 808’s and electro-pop infused radio hip-hop drowning the rap world right now. Check out the entire album below, and then keep your eyes peeled to the Candlewax website for more info on the official release of
    The Acorns – Oak Future.
