• Vince Staples w/ Kilo Kish @ 930 Club Washington DC March 31 2017

This was probably one of the better live shows I’ve seen in a while. Kilo Kish opening was fantastic. Her set displayed her love for performance art. Her set was very theatrical, contained great music, and a very entertaining. Also, just when you think you’re doing something you see someone doing ten times better. Kilo Kish’s one man band was very impressive. I’m not sure if many others in the building noticed him constructing the tracks from the ground up on the spot and on time. Then alternating between riffs on the guitar, piano, and inserting effects live. It was impressive to see this guy work.

The room filled in and it was time for Vince Staples to take the stage. Perched up on the second floor of the club I had a great view of the stage. Vince commanded it for an hour, all by himself. As far as I could tell, he didn’t have a dj or hypeman. He put on an amazing performance. All by himself. Definitely a highlight for 2017 concert going.

  • Pusha T @ 9:30 Club Washington DC March 23 2016

Actually attending a live performance can make an artist endearing. Here is an example. Sure, I’ve known about Pusha T since he was on Pharrell’s label Star Trak with his brother as The Clipse. Admittedly, I’ve not really head much of his work outside of The Clipse’s and appearances on a couple of Kanye tracks. As the excitement built approaching the performance date I’d have conversations with my friend and learn some cool tid bits.  One being that King Push is the CEO of Kanye’s record label GOOD Music. I made sure to listen to his new record “King Push” so I could be familiar with the material. By the end of the show I had become a fan, going through his previous releases. Back tracking and learning more. I don’t really know much else to say other than King Push’s set was compelling, endearing, and overall a good time.  The crowd was live, vibe was good, and everyone seemed to really enjoy the event. It was one of the best “hip hop” shows I’ve been to in a while.

  • Soulection / Goldlink @ 9:30 Club Washington DC July 22 2015

A friend of mine put me up on the Soulection crew. I did a little poking around on my own and remember hearing some really cool music that some of these cats had made. Then, I caught Goldlink at last year’s Trillectro festival. I really thought he had a nice performance.  His song “Wassup” got my attention.  Then his album “The God Complex” came out. It was a great first offering from the Virginia rapper.
